FROM PASTURES TO BEACH TOURS

This northern wedge bottles a taste of Sicily's two extremes. Head inland to find peace and pristine nature in the remote Nebrodi mountains. Then Beach-hop in high season along the crowded coast with seemingly half of Italy - don't miss Cefalù's endless sweep of sandy gold spiaggia and enchanting old town. Slow right down to really get under the skin of Sicily's wild and empty interior - a timeless landscape, stone villages and forgotten valleys. Greek ruins, breathtaking views and endless pastoral tradition reward those who venture this far. The Tyrrhenian Coast has a split personality: plan ahead for its busy coastal quarters, but drift without haste through the tranquil mountains of the Nebrodi to the south.

The lovely, off-the-beaten-track Nebrodi Regional Park, traversed by the 70km-long Dorsale dei Nebrodi hiking trail, constitutes Sicily’s largest forested area. Its undulating landscape shelters the remnants of Sicily’s wildlife: porcupines, San Fratello horses, wildcats and birds of prey. Bird watchers can peacefully observe herons and stilts on back-country Lago di Biviere, and the occasional golden eagle, peregrine falcon and griffon vulture circling the park’s highest peak Monte Soro (1847m).

eating and drinking

Lower pastures hide a handful of remote, traditional villages where agricultural communities harvest mushrooms and hazelnuts, churn out creamy ricotta and graze cows, sheep, horses, goats and Nebrodi’s signature black pig.

Nature

A coastline spilling across three seas and mountains that capture every traveller's full attention with their explosive volcanic heritage make Sicily superb hiking terrain.

Marked trails lead to time-trodden mule tracks to shepherd's hus where ricotta is crafted over an open wood fire, up smoking volcanoes and down hillsides stitched from centurion dry-stone walls and prickly pears.

Pick up locally produced maps before setting out, and if in doubt, book up a local guide.
